Indian Engineering Services (ESE)
Indian Engineering Services are the Civil Services the meet the Technical and Managerial Duties of Govt of India. Indian Engineering Services consists of Engineers who are designated Class 1 officers. They work under the Government of India. Indian Government recruits aspirants to this Indian Engineering Services as Civil Servants and Officials through a recruitment Exam called Engineering Services Examination. Indian Engineering Services Examination is abbreviated as ESE.
ESE Exam 2017 Indian Engineering Services Examination (ESE)
ESE / ESI (Indian Engineering services examination) is one of the toughest and competitive exams in India. Indian Engineering Services is the most sought-after careers for the engineering students in India. This combined competitive exam is organized by the Union Public Service Commission of India. ESE Exam is organized in three stages. The qualified candidates will be recruited mainly in the following departments.
- Civil Engineering.
- Mechanical Engineering.
- Electrical Engineering.
- Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
Due to a large number of candidates take these exams, competing for limited posts, ESE exam is considered as one of the toughest exams in the India and the world. The candidate’s selection ratio in the Indian Engineering services examination is 0.00275 based on 2010 statistics. The major portion of the qualified candidates in the exam are graduates of Institutes Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Science.
ESE Exam Eligibility
ESE Exam Eligibility is mainly determined, based on the three different requirements – Nationality, Education, and Age of the candidates. Here are clear details of ESE Exam Eligibility.

A person must of the following
- A citizen of India
- A Subject of Nepal or Bhutan with an intention of permanently settling in India.
- A candidate of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Zaire, Kenya, Uganda, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Education | ESE Exam Eligibility
Candidate must be at least bachelor’s degree in Engineering from a recognized university or board by the government of India.
Candidates who have M.Sc degree or any of its equivalent degree in Wireless Communications, Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as specialization are also acceptable for certain vacancies.
Age | ESE Exam Eligibility
Candidate must have a minimum age of 21 years. And should not cross the upper age limit of 30 years.
Age relaxation is applicable for the reserved categories SC ST, OBC and PH candidates as per the Govt norms.
- 3 years of Age relaxation for the OBC candidates (Non-Creamy layer only).
- 4 years for Defence Services Personnel disabled in operation during hostilities.
- 5 years of age relaxation for SC and ST candidates.
- 5 years of age relaxation for the ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs (with minimum Five years of Service)
ESE Selection Process 2017
From the year 2017 UPSC has approved the following structural changes in ESE exam. This structure is based on the recommendation of expert committees formed by the UPSC.
ESE Exam / ESE exam is conducted in three different stages.
ESE Preliminary Exam (Stage 1) | ESE Exam Pattern
The first stage of Engineering Services Exam is also called preliminary exam. It is an Objective Type Paper. It is conducted for a total of 500 marks.
It consists of two papers.
ESE Prelims Paper I: First Paper of Engineering Services is common for all the candidates. It is conducted for a total of 200 marks. Candidate should answer this Paper in 2 hours.
ESE Prelims Paper II: Second Paper of Engineering Services is Engineering Discipline (Specific Paper). It is conducted for a total of 300 marks. Attendees should answer the question paper within 3 hours of time.

The Qualifying marks for each paper will be fixed by the commission. Those who qualified in the Preliminary exam will only be allowed for the Stage II Examination (Mains).
ESE Mains Examination (Stage II) | IES Exam Pattern
Indian Engineering Services ESE mains Exam consists of two papers. This is conventional type examination. Candidates who have in ESE Prelims Exam will be called for the ESE mains exam. ESE Main Exam is conducted for a total of 600 marks. Qualifying marks for this stage will be decided by the Commission.
ESE Mains Paper I: The first paper Engineering Discipline – Specific paper-I is Conducted for a time period of 3 hours. Candidates should answer this question paper within 3 hours of time to secure a maximum of 300 marks.
ESE Mains Paper II: The second paper is Engineering Discipline- Specific Paper III. Paper II is conducted for a maximum of 300 marks. Candidate should answer this question paper within 3 hours of time.

ESE Personality Test (Stage III)
The personality test is an Interview conducted for the Qualified candidates. The candidates who have qualified in Stage I and Stage II will be called for the interview. The candidates who are selected in this stage will be called for the training session.

- Candidates are required to apply only through online.
- Aspirants who are eligible and interested in ESE recruitment exam can apply through the official website of UPSC.
- Candidate should pay an application fee of Rupees 200 /-
- No Exam Fees for the Female and Reserved category applicants.
