What is a Civil Services Examination?
Civil Services Examination is one of the competitive examinations in India. Civil Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. UPSC Civil Services Exam Eligibility

- Candidates who wish to apply for the Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service should be a Citizen of India.
Citizen of IndiaCandidates who wish to apply for the other services including Defence Estates service, Foreign Service, informative service and more must be one of the following.
- Citizens of India.
- A Citizen of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan.
- A person of Indian region who has migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of settling permanently in India.
Education Qualification Eligibility
Candidates who are interested in attending for the UPSC Civil Services Examination must have one fo the following qualifications
- He / She should be a degree holder from a central, state or a deemed university.
- Should have a degree from an open university.
- Should be degree holder through correspondence or distance education.
The qualification acquired by the candidate should be from a college or University recognized by the Government of India.
Candidates should be in the age limit of 21 years to 32 years as on August 1st of the year of the examination. Prescribed age limit varies with respect to the caste reservations.
Civil Services Selection Procedure
The civil service examination is considered as the toughest exams conducted in India. It is also the most difficult and competitive exams in India. Every year on an average of 9 lakh to 10 lakh people will apply for this examination. And mostly 450000 people are appearing for the preliminary exam of civil service examination. The civil service selection process is totally based on three stages. In order to get selected for the civil service examination, the applicant should qualify in all the three stages which are mentioned in the below section.
Civils Preliminary examination
The preliminary examination is the first stage of the civil service selection procedure. All the applied candidates should attend the preliminary examination. Mostly exam will be announced in the months of February or March. And the exam will be held on June 2 July each year. Final results of the preliminary examination will be published in middle August of every year.
Civils Mains examination
Civils preliminary exam qualified candidates are called for the mains examination. The civils Mains examination is usually conducted in the month of October every year. Results of civils Mains examination are announced in the second week of March approximately.
Personal Interview or Test
Candidates should have attended the mains exam of the civil service examination procedure, will be called for the final test called personality test or interview. This interview is held mostly in the month of December each year.
Finally, the candidates who have selected in all three stages will be called for a training program. The training program usually starts in the following September. Civil Services Exam Syllabus
UPSC conducts Civil Services Exams in 3 different stages. UPSC conducts this exam in order to recruit eligible aspirants in the Indian Services including Administration Services (IAS) and Police Service (IPS) among others.

Civil Services Vacancies
Normally the UPSC Civil Services Vacancies varies every year. UPSC Civil Services Examination is one of the competitive exams in India. In the year 2006 four lakh people had applied for the five hundred vacancies. Of those, the only Seven thousand five hundred people have qualified in the preliminary exam (the first stage in the selection process).
Generally, the pass percentage in the Civil Services preliminary exam is 11 to 12 times to the number of the Civil Services Vacancies. And the pass percentage in the main exam is two times to the number of the Civil Services Vacancies.
Reservation is applied for the reserved categories SC/ST/OBC in the Civil Services recruitment process (As per the existing policies).

Civil’s Preliminary Exam Pattern (First stage)
The preliminary examination consists of two papers. Both objective type question papers. This exam is conducted for a total 400 marks (Where each paper carries 200 marks). These question papers are basically set in different languages English and Hindi.
The time duration for the two exams is 4 hours (2hours each).

Civils mains exam is a written exam with 9 papers. In which, two papers are qualifying papers and the remaining 7 papers are for ranking.
The two qualifying papers will be conducted for 600 marks (each paper carries 300 marks). And the remaining 7 papers will be conducted for 1750 marks (each paper carries 250 marks).
The Personality Test (The Final Stage)
This Personality Test is followed by the Civils Mains examination. This personality test is conducted to test the mental abilities of the candidate. This exam is conducted for a total of 275 marks.
