Before starting preparation for the Civil Service examinations, one should know the full details of UPSC Prelims Syllabus, & UPSC mains syllabus for the interview. The UPSC considers the Preliminary Exam as the qualifying examination for the UPSC mains and the Personality Test (Interview). Mostly the UPSC Prelims notification will be published in the months of February or March of the year. And Prelims examination will be held in the month of June or July. The UPSC Prelims results will be released in the Mid-August. All the qualified candidates in the UPSC prelims will be called for the UPSC Mains examination. The UPSC Mains Examination will be held in the month of October. And the UPSC Mains Exam results are usually published in the second week of March. All the candidates who have attended the Mains examination will attend the interview which is usually held in the month of December. The UPSC Civils exam final results will be announced in the month of May. All the selected candidates will be called for the Civils training program which would mostly commence in the following September.

UPSC Prelims Exam Pattern / Syllabus
The Qualifying test for the UPSC Civil Services is the prelims exam. Aspirants should write two papers Paper 1 (General Studies) and Paper 2 (Aptitude). Each Paper caries 200 marks. Aspirants should complete the each paper in Prelims examination in two hours. The marks secured in the UPSC Prelims exam will not counted in the final tally of the UPSC Mains Exam.

- Note 1: The total UPSC Prelims question paper is an objective type which is also called as multiple choice type question.
- Note 2: Negative marking is calculated in Prelims exam. The penalty of 33% marks 0.83 marks for every wrong answer is calculated.
- Note 3: Decision-making and problem-solving do not have a Negative marking.
- Note 4: Blind Candidates are allowed to have an extra time of 20 minutes for each paper.
- Note 5: It is mandatory for the candidates to attend both of the papers in the preliminary examination for the purpose of evaluation.
UPSC Mains Exam Pattern / Syllabus
UPSC Mains Exam is conducted by the UPSC to assess the Academic skill and Capabilities of the aspirants to state their knowledge. The mains exam is mainly to analyze the general intellectual persona and profundity of understanding of the candidates. The UPSC Mains Exam is a written test with nine papers including qualifying papers. Each paper carries 250 marks except the qualifying papers (Indian Language and English). The candidate can choose one language eighth schedule of the constitution or English as a medium for writing the examination.

- Note 1: The qualifying papers will be in Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of qualifying nature only.
